8-19-13 Sharks are here with the Fall Tuna Run

The “humps” have been very active the last week here off the Florida Keys. There’s been lots of blackfin and skipjack tuna, which means the sharks aren’t far behind! We stopped by one of the Humps the other day and we hooked 10 tunas, but were only able to get 3 in because the sharks were eating them faster than we could bring them in. Since we did catch a few tuna, I rigged up our shark rod and put a live skipjack out for bait. It only took 60 seconds to get a bite, and after a 20 minute fight we had a 7′ long, 200 lb silky shark next to the boat. After a few pictures we released the fish. It was Paul’s goal to catch a fish over 100 lbs in his lifetime, and the shark was the ticket! His wife Melissa was up next, and at 105 lbs she was in for a battle. We put out another skipjack tuna, and within minutes she was hooked up to a monster. After a 30 minute tug of war, she had a 9′ long , 300 lb dusky shark boat side! She was exhausted but ecstatic! We took a few pics and released the shark to fight another day. If you’re looking for some monster shark fishing send me an email and we’ll give it our best shot!

7-23-13 Night Sharks in the Day!

A common shark caught off Islamorada at night time out in 1000′ to 2000′ of water is the cuban night shark. Occasionally we will catch them in the daytime, but deep down on the bottom compared to near the surface like at night. The other day we were out searching for swordfish, but since they weren’t biting, we tried a little shallower, only 1400′ down and sure enough we got a couple of shark bites! The first one was a big 125 lb cuban night shark, and the next drift we caught about a 70 lber. We had a lady angler from Texas who loved to catch anything that pulled, and these were her first night sharks. The florida keys shark fishing is always an option when you want something with big teeth and a big fight!

7/21/13 Shark fishing islamorada in july

The backcountry waters can hold plenty of sharks in the summer time through July.  Getting out early to catch bait is important.  I’ve been fishing mullet a lot lately which you have to catch.  Sharks love them as do tarpon so you have a shot at both, many areas we fish can hold sharks, tarpon, and even other large predators.  You can also catch things such as ladyfish, jacks, or other small fish for bait.  We’ve been catching lots of blacktips in the channels.  We got plenty today along with this hammerhead and some tarpon too.  Lemon sharks are in good numbers on the flats, and bulls can be found all around the everglades.

6-20-13 Mako and Hammerhead for the Bn’M

Aboard the Bn’M I started out this morning heading to one of the humps offshore of Islamorada. There’s been some tuna around and whenever that’s the case there’s always a shot at a shark. We got to the hump and caught a few tuna right away. We put out one live tuna for shark bait and then one dead one and started drifting. After about 10 minutes we got a bite. We hooked up about a 100 lb hammerhead and 14 year old Garrett got in the Chair. We had a second bite we missed while battling his, but after a 15 minute fight we had his shark boat side and released it after a few quick pics. Later on in the afternoon we went swordfishing, and about 3 p.m. we hooked a mako shark down about 1200′! After a 20 minute fight and some great pics we released an estimated 175 lb mako shark. That was the first mako I have caught in 7 years, and my second ever! There should still be some shark around the next few months so let us know when you want to try to get out there for some Shark Fishing in the Florida Keys!

6/16/13 Backcountry and gulf shark fishing in Islamorada Florida Keys

Well summer time is here and that usually means fairly calm weather.  This makes the perfect opportunity for some backcountry shark fishing in Islamorada.  We run a little bit further often this time of year into the gulf of mexico where some of the big boys of the backcountry wait.  Monster bull sharks up to 300 lbs!  We also catch lots of this big goliath grouper this time of year too.  Blacktip sharks also roam about, and of course lemons are usually more back around the flats areas.  If you want to do some florida keys shark fishing then just shoot me an email.  The past week we’ve done two trips into the gulf and caught big bulls both times as well as the goliaths.  We also had cobia and permit as well for smaller game.  The last couple days in the backcountry this week we even encountered ‘mud marlin’ which is NOT uncommon this time of year.  The sharks are good back there too and as stated you have more of a shot at the lemon sharks and such back there which are fun.  We like to catch fresh stuff for live bait such as ladyfish or mullet.  Sometimes we can even arrange to have a cooler of fresh dead stuff to go if sharking is what you really want to focus on the whole time!  It’s a blast catching sharks in islamorada!
